WESTPORT — “Bottom line, you’re either a risk taker or you’re not, and if you don’t take risks, you’ll never win big.” — Geno Auriemma
Auriemma, who has coached the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team to 11 national championships, will bring his winning attitude to Westport on Sept. 7 when he speaks at a program sponsored by the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston at the Westport Library.
His appearance is set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at the library, 20 Jesup Road. The event is open only to members of the Y’s Men and their spouses, according to organizers.
Since being named head coach of Huskies women’s basketball for the 1985-86 season, Auriemma has compiled the highest winning percentage among coaches for major NCAA and NAIA women’s basketball teams.
In addition to the 11 NCAA titles, Auriemma has led the Huskies women to 22 Final Four appearances, six perfect seasons and 57 conference championships.
He was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He also has been named Naismith National Coach of the Year eight times, AP National Coach of the Year nine times, WBCA National Coach of the Year seven times and conference coach of the year 16 times.
Auriemma is the first coach in women’s basketball history to guide a team to five consecutive Final Four appearances on two separate occasions and set a record with 14 consecutive Final Fours from 2008-22, according to the UConn women’s basketball website.
