WESTPORT — The Staples Wreckers squeaked by the Darien Blue Wave, 30-28, yesterday. It was a close game throughout for the two evenly matched teams.
Senior captain Sydelle Bernstein led Staples with 10 points, followed by fellow senior captain McKenzie Didio with six.
In the first half, each squad smothered the other, collectively scoring only 25 points. Darien led at the half 14-11.
In the second half, both offenses perked up. Staples moved the ball well to take advantage of holes in Darien’s defense. As the Wreckers’ shots began to fall in the third quarter, it was senior captain Mia Didio’s three pointer that put Staples in the lead, marking a crucial turning point in the game.
In the fourth quarter, Staples defense proved dominant against a strong offensive effort from Darien. With 40 seconds left, Staples held a one point lead and Darien held the ball. Senior captain Jen Westphal stole the ball and was fouled. Westphal iced the game with another point for Staples from the foul line.
With the recent surge in the COVID cases, student spectators are not allowed to attend home games until further notice. Staples was not at full strength due to COVID-19 protocols.
The Lady Wreckers will carry a 3-2 record to Ridgefield on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
