WESTPORT — Two potential appointees for open seats on the Board of Education and the Zoning Board of Appeals have been endorsed by the Democratic Town Committee’s Nominations Committee.

The recommended appointments will be acted on Monday by the full town committee, and then will be forwarded for consideration by the respective town boards.

Since both open seats previously were held by Democrats, their replacements also must have the same political affiliation. But remaining members of the school board and ZBA will vote to make the appointments official, and are not bound by the Democratic Town Committee’s recommendations.

Abby Gordon-Tolan is the candidate recommended by Democrats’ nominating panel to fill the open seat on the Board of Education. It was left vacant as of Jan. 1 by the resignation of Christina Torres, a Democrat who resigned to focus on her new job as superintendent of schools in the Mount Pleasant Cottage School District in Westchester County, N.Y.

Joe Scordato, currently an alternate ZBA member, is the candidate recommended for the town committee’s endorsement to full membership on the board. The ZBA vacancy occurred in December when Democrat Amy Wistreich resigned after her appointment to fill an open Planning and Zoning Commission seat, which was held by Democrat Danielle Dobin until her election to the Board of Finance in November.

Gordon-Tolan served as the co-chair of the Westport Special Education PTA, president of the Kings Highway Elementary School PTA, DEI representative at Coleytown Middle School and has been a teacher in New York City public schools, according to Democratic officials.

Scordato, in addition to currently serving as a ZBA alternate, is a lawyer who was previously vice chair of the Democratic Town Committee and has volunteered to work for several local, state and national political campaigns, party officials said.
