WESTPORT – Westport’s first responders will get upgraded lifesaving equipment after the success of a fundraising effort last year.

Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Service has purchased 50 new Philips Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), which will replace aging equipment in police, fire, and EMS vehicles. AEDs are portable devices that offer a quick, easy to use method of responding to anyone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.

“These new AEDs significantly strengthen our emergency response capabilities,” said Fire Chief Nick Marsan. “When someone is in cardiac arrest, every second counts. Ensuring our first responders have the most reliable tools available is a commitment to the safety and well-being of our community.”

The AEDs were purchased for a total cost of $62,020, of which $25,000 was raised by the Westport Firefighters Charitable Foundation during a fundraiser in the spring of 2024. The remaining balance was covered by the Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Service.

Westport’s emergency responders shared their gratitude to the community for their assistance in purchasing the new equipment.

“On behalf of the Westport Firefighters, it’s incredibly exciting to see this idea become a reality,” said James Bairaktaris, President of Westport Volunteer EMS. “Knowing these AEDs will one day save a life is what makes this effort so meaningful.”
