WESTPORT — Three firefighters and a police officer from Westport have deployed to North Carolina as members of a regional team to help recovery operations in the aftermath of devastation wreaked by Hurricane Helene.

In the field, the local emergency responders will use Field-Comm 1, a mobile command unit equipped with cutting-edge communications and coordination technology, according to a Fire Department statement.

The group includes Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Cohen, Firefighters Michael Durette and Patrick Dailey, and Police Officer Greg Gunter.

Their primary role will be to provide “communication and data restoration support as part of a regional emergency response initiative,” fire officials said.

The Field-Comm 1 vehicle has various capabilities, including satellite communication, radio interoperability and internet access.

“This vehicle allows our team to operate independently and maintain essential communication links between local responders, state agencies and federal resources,” Fire Chief Nick Marsan said in the statement. “Field-Comm 1 is a critical asset in managing large-scale incidents, making sure that communities get the help they need quickly and efficiently.”

Officials said the town will be reimbursed for all costs for personnel, equipment and resources through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact in collaboration with the State of North Carolina.
