WESTPORT – A Stratford man turned himself in to Westport police last week on charges that he burglarized a home where he had been working as a contractor around New Year’s Day.

The burglary was reported Jan. 2, 2025, by other contractors working on the home, who said the owners had been out of the country since Dec. 31, 2024.

Someone had entered the house by breaking a glass panel on the garage door. The cost of the damage was $1,700, and various currencies worth about $2,000 in US dollars had been stolen, police said.

“Through an extensive investigation including the drafting and execution of multiple search warrants, Joseph Benway III was developed as a suspect,” the police said in a release. “Benway had been employed at the residence as a contractor and was at the scene when the initial report was filed.”

A warrant was issued for Benway, who turned himself in on Nov. 12. Police charged him with first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree larceny. He posted $150,000 bond and is due to be arraigned in Stamford Superior Court on Dec. 3.
