WESTPORT — Residents are invited to dispose of unused and unwanted prescription medications Saturday as part of the Westport police participation in “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.”

Medications will be collected — “free and no questions asked,” police said — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave.

The program is the twenty-third organized nationally by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. For more information, click here.

Only pills and patches will be accepted during the collection. Also, only vape pens where batteries can be removed will be accepted for disposal at the collection.

Liquids, needles and sharps will not be accepted.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that last year more than 93,000 people died of drug overdoses in the United States, the largest number of drug-related deaths recorded in one year, according to a statement from police about the medication collection.

Westport police reported the last local Drug Take Back Day in April contributed to a nationwide collection totaling nearly 721,093 pounds of unwanted prescriptions, according to the DEA.

A collection bin also is located in the lobby of Westport Police Department headquarters, 50 Jesup Road, where prescription drugs can be dropped off at any time.
