WESTPORT — Two people were hospitalized after a smoky fire erupted at a Hunt Club Lane home Wednesday morning.
Firefighters, dispatched to the fire scene shortly after 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, reported heavy smoke billowing from the structure. Five fire units and the shift commander were initially sent to the scene.
Two occupants, who reportedly suffered injuries, managed to escape from the two-story house by the time firefighters arrived, according to the report by Assistant Fire Chief Brett Kirby. They were transported to a hospital for treatment by Westport EMS crews, but as of Wednesday evening their conditions were not available.
Dense smoke was pouring from three sides of the dwelling, with “evidence of a possible explosion” may have occurred in the structure’s basement, according to the report.
As hoses were extended into the house, smoke was spreading throughout the structure, but firefighters discovered the fire was confined to the basement.
Flames in the basement area were quickly extinguished just as they were starting to spread to the overhead ceiling, according to the report.
Firefighters searched the rest of the house to ensure all occupants were accounted for and that flames did not spread. Meanwhile, smoke was ventilated from the building and carbon monoxide levels were monitored.
Fire crews cleared the scene about 1:30 p.m.
Westport police were on scene during emergency operations on Hunt Club Lane.
Backup support was provided by firefighters from Fairfield, Norwalk and Wilton, who handled other fire calls while Westport firefighters were at the fire scene.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
