WESTPORT — A truck crash knocked out power to hundreds downtown and beyond Friday morning, but most electric service was restored later in the morning.

A large box truck struck a utility pole on Post Road East near Saugatuck Congregational Church about 9:15 a.m. Friday, police said.

Over an hour later some 595 local Eversource customers were without electricity, but by 11 a.m. all but seven Westport outages were being reported,

Police said the accident broke the pole, tearing down power lines that fell across the road. Post Road East was closed between Myrtle Avenue and Compo Road while emergency repairs took place, but the street was later fully reopened to traffic, police said in a statement issued just before 11:45 a.m. Friday.
