WESTPORT — A 22-year-old driver, traveling the wrong way on a local stretch of Interstate 95 early Sunday, was operating an SUV under the influence of alcohol or drugs before crashing in a highway construction zone, according to State Police.
Cory Gomes, of Fairfield, was spotted driving north in the southbound lanes of I-95, just north of Exit 16 in Norwalk, heading into Westport about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The 2014 Honda CR-V that Gomes was driving at some point veered into the highway median, and drove about 400 feet through an unpaved construction zone before coming to an “uncontrolled final rest” near Exit 17 at Saugatuck Avenue, police said.
The SUV’s air bags were delayed by the impact of the crash, according to the report, but Gomes and a passenger were not injured, according to the report. The disabled car had to be towed from the scene.
Gomes did not strike any other vehicles, according to the report.
Troopers dispatched to the scene noted the Gomes’s eyes were “bloodshot” and detected an alcoholic odor in the vehicle, police said.
Gomes was unable to perform a standardized field sobriety test to standard, State Police said, and was taken into custody at the scene.
He was transported to State Police Troop G Barracks in Bridgeport, where he was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving the wrong way on a highway, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.
Gomes was released after posting $2,500 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned March 16 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
