WESTPORT — DNA found on evidence left behind at the scene of an attempted residential burglary in 2021 has led to the arrest of a man held at an upstate prison, police said.
Wilfredo Ramirez-Alvarado, 42, whose address was given as the state’s Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers, was charged Feb. 28 with criminal attempt at third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief.
The arrest follows a police investigation that began Nov. 1, 2021, into an attempted break-in at a local home.
Several pieces of evidence, found near a broken basement window where attempted entry was made, were collected by investigators and sent to the Connecticut Forensic Science Laboratory for processing.
Last July, the lab notified the Westport police detective investigating the case that DNA found on the evidence appeared to match that of an inmate incarcerated on an unrelated charge at the Osborn prison.
After a search warrant was issued, a DNA swab was taken from the suspect — identified as Wilfredo Ramirez-Alvarado — “which confirmed that his DNA was found on evidence left behind at the scene,” according to the report.
A warrant was issued for the arrest of Ramirez-Alvarado, who was formally charged with the Westport incident during a Feb. 28 appearance at state Superior Court in Stamford.
