WESTPORT — A New York woman is accused of stealing a resident’s refund check from the Internal Revenue Service earlier this year and depositing the proceeds in her bank account, police said.
Heylee Soto, 22, of Astoria, N.Y., was charged Nov. 25 with first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft and conspiracy to commit third-degree identity theft.
Police launched an investigation Feb. 21 after a resident reported that a refund check mailed by the IRS had not been received.
The complainant contacted the IRS and learned the check had not been lost, but was apparently stolen from the mail and deposited in an unrecognized bank account, police said.
The police investigation, using search warrants, recorded ATM surveillance footage and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies, identified Heylee Soto as a suspect in the incident, according to the report.
A warrant for Soto’s arrest was issued, and on Nov. 25 she turned herself in at Police Department headquarters. She was held on $150,000 bond for arraignment at state Superior Court in Stamford.
