WESTPORT — A New Haven woman who sped from the scene of a suspected larceny at Stop & Shop supermarket Friday afternoon — leaving behind her partner as he was taken into custody — was apprehended after crashing into a van a short distance away.
The incident took place about 1;50 p.m. Friday when officers were dispatched to the parking lot of the supermarket at 1790 Post Road East to investigate the report of a larceny involving a male and female suspects.
About $390 worth of merchandise allegedly was shoplifted, police said.
An officer already on patrol in the parking lot identified the suspects’ van, and when the couple was approached, the man behind the wheel — later identified as Garrett Sprouse, 45, of New Haven —immediately complied, according to the report.
The woman, however, jumped into the driver’s seat as her partner was being taken into custody and began to drive away, police said. When the officer attempted to stop her, he was dragged a short distance by the fleeing van.
The woman headed west on Post Road East at “a high rate of speed,” police said, eluding other officers who tried to stop her.
But at the intersection with Morningside Drive, she crashed into another van. The woman — identified by police as Hannah Howell, 31, of New Haven — was taken into custody and brought to a hospital for treatment of what police said appeared to be minor injuries.
No other injuries were reported during the incident.
A stretch of Post Road East was closed briefly while the accident scene was cleared.
Sprouse was charged with sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He was released after posting $500 bond.
Howell, who as of Friday night was being held on $15,000 bond, was charged with assault on a police officer, interfering with police, sixth-degree larceny, reckless driving, engaging in pursuit and failure to obey a traffic signal.
