WESTPORT — A New Haven man was charged with interfering with a police officer and a series of motor vehicle offenses after an incident on Post Road East last week.

Timothy Bell, 29, in addition to the interfering allegation, was charged with operating an unregistered vehicle, misuse of license plates, violation of lost plate replacements, operating a motor vehicle without insurance and driving without a valid driver’s license.

The incident took place shortly after 3 p.m. July 12 when an officer on patrol stopped a car lacking a standard license plate and, according to the report, with a temporary registration certificate that had expired and belonged to another vehicle.

During the stop, the driver — identified by police as Bell — became “extremely argumentative and refused to comply” with the officer’s instructions, according to the report.

After checking crime databases, police learned that Bell was wanted on an active warrant issued by New Haven police.

Bell was taken into custody and brought to Police Department headquarters where he was formally charged. He was released after posting $5,000 bond and turned over to New Haven police.
