WESTPORT — A Stratford man is charged with stealing letters with checks that a resident had placed in her mailbox awaiting pickup by the Postal Service.

Treyvon Chapman, 26, was arrested March 11 on charges of third-degree identity theft, third-degree criminal attempt to commit larceny and illegal possession of a personal identification information device.

Police began investigating a complaint filed by a resident last Nov. 5, who said two letters with checks were stolen from her mailbox by an unknown suspect who fled the scene.

The woman immediately notified her bank to stop payment on the stolen checks, and two days later, she was notified by a bank in Milford that someone tried to cash one of them, which was declined.

Investigators used video-surveillance recordings, search warrants and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies to identify Treyvon Chapman as the letter theft suspect, according to the report.

A warrant for Chapman’s arrest was issued, and he was taken into custody March 11 at his Stratford residence.

He was later released after posting $35,000 bond, and is scheduled to be arraigned April 1 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
