WESTPORT — A 33-year-old Weston man was charged last week by local police with trying to possess and distribute illegal narcotics.

Carter King, who initially was held on $100,000 bond, was arrested Dec. 2 on charges of criminal attempt at possession with intent to distribute narcotics and conspiracy to commit possession with intent to distribute narcotics, police said.

Police began an investigation in early October after a “suspicious” package was delivered to a Westport address where the owner currently does not reside.

The person overseeing the property in the owner’s absence told police that her suspicions were aroused because the package was not addressed to the owner and the return address was a location outside the United States, according to the report.

After opening the package, the woman found pills that she suspected might be narcotics, prompting her to contact police.

After confirming that the pills were illegal narcotics, police detectives launched an investigation, which included issuing a search-and-seizure warrant.

King, who knows the property owner, was apparently at the site that day in anticipation of the package’s delivery, according to police.

King was identified as a suspect, and after gathering additional evidence, investigators came to believe that he was the intended recipient of the drug delivery.

A warrant was issued for King’s arrest, and he was taken into custody on the afternoon of Dec. 2 by Westport detectives.

After posting his $100,000 bond, King was released to face arraignment on the charges Dec. 10 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
