WESTPORT — A tractor-trailer driver, wanted on a Missouri arrest warrant, fled the scene of his disabled truck using a scooter on a local stretch of Interstate 95 Wednesday, and battled State and Westport police, and a K-9 named Gatti, before being taken into custody.
James Wesley Aldridge, 35, of Washington, D.C., faces multiple charges in connection with the incident that unfolded near I-95’s southbound Exit 17, as well as a warrant for his arrest on a charge of first-degree harassment issued by police in Grain Valley, Mo.
The incident began shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when a State Police trooper was dispatched from Troop G in Bridgeport to investigate the report of a tractor-trailer left disabled in a “hazardous” spot on the I-95 median near southbound Exit 17.
En route, the trooper was advised the truck driver — identified as Aldridge — had left the scene and was aboard an electric scooter traveling south in the highway’s right-hand shoulder.

Aldridge initially stopped the scooter after the trooper caught up, but became increasingly aggressive and uncooperative while being questioned, according to State Police. As a result, the trooper prepared to release K-9 Gatti to help bring Aldridge into compliance, but the suspect hopped back on the scooter and sped away, eluding both the trooper and the dog.
Aldridge, monitored by I-95’s surveillance cameras, was seen leaving the highway at southbound Exit 17, where two more troopers were waiting in cruisers to intercept him at the end of the off-ramp.
At the point, he resisted attempts to be taken into custody and fought with troopers, police said. When the first trooper to encounter Aldridge arrived at the scene, he unleashed Gatti. During an altercation — despite Aldridge’s attempts to choke the dog — Gatti bit the suspect in the thigh, helping troopers, assisted by Westport officers, subdue him and take him into custody, according to the report.
Aldridge continued to struggle even after being handcuffed, allegedly spitting at police before being transported to a hospital for treatment. Troopers at the scene reported minor injuries from their efforts to restrain Aldridge, but the K-9 was unharmed.
After being released from the hospital, Aldridge was transported to the Bridgeport Correctional Center where he was formally arrested on a series of charges.
He was charged with being a fugitive from justice in connection with the Missouri arrest warrant. Bond for that offense was set at $250,000 and he was arraigned Thursday at state Superior Court in Stamford.
Charges filed against him in connection with the I-95 incident include: six counts of assault on a public safety officer, two counts of cruelty to animals, interfering with an officer, reckless use of a highway by a pedestrian, improper parking and operating/parking an unregistered vehicle.
Bond for the state offenses was set at $100,000 and Aldridge also was arraigned on those charges Thursday at Superior Court.
