WESTPORT — A 40-year-old driver was arrested last week after police said he narrowly avoided a collision with a police cruiser while driving drunk.

Edison Landon, of Stratford, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to drive in the proper lane.

The incident took place shortly after 1:30 a.m. Oct. 7 when an officer patrolling Post Road East, near Roseville Road, saw a white van traveling erratically in the eastbound lanes.

The van crossed over the road’s double yellow lines into the westbound lanes, heading toward the police cruiser and “causing the officer to brake, honk and swerve to the right to avoid a collision,” according to the report.

When the driver failed to stop, the officer made a U-turn and pulled over the van.

The driver — identified as Landon — smelled of alcohol and was slurring his speech, police said. Landon agreed to perform a field sobriety test, but failed to perform it to standard, according to the report.

Landon was arrested, formally charged and released from custody after posting $500 bond. He is scheduled to appear Nov. 4 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
