WESTPORT — A 22-year-old Bridgeport man faces a series of criminal charges — including DUI and gun violations — after he was stopped by police this week on suspicion of driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

The incident took place on Post Road East shortly after noon March 20 when a driver — identified as Gabriel Maldonado — was pulled over by an officer on patrol who found his vehicle “was displaying registration credentials that did not match the vehicle,” according to the report.

While speaking with Maldonado, the officer smelled an odor of burnt marijuana, police said. The officer allegedly saw a marijuana cigarette burning in the center console, and Maldonado “confirmed” to the officer “that he had recently smoked a marijuana cigarette,” police said.

Maldonado, asked if he had any weapons, according to the report, told the officer he had a firearms permit and was carrying a pistol.

Asked to step out of the vehicle, police said Maldonado appeared to be intoxicated and had a pistol in his pocket.

After completing their investigation, police charged Maldonado with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, illegally carrying a firearm while under the influence, operating an unregistered vehicle, misuse of a license plates, operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and lacking sufficient motor vehicle insurance.

He was released after posting $10,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned March 30 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
