WESTPORT — A 54-year-old employee of the Whelk restaurant has died from “life-threatening” injuries he suffered when struck by a motor vehicle on Riverside Avenue late Saturday, police said.

Matthew Balga, of Norwalk, died shortly after being taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment following the incident near 575 Riverside Ave. about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to an updated announcement from police Sunday morning.

Balga worked at the Whelk, which is located at 575 Riverside Ave.

He was struck by a motor vehicle heading south on Riverside, although it was not immediately clear if he was in a crosswalk at the time of the accident, according to police.

The driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

At the early stages of the investigation, alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the accident, police spokesman Lt. Eric Woods said early Sunday afternoon.

Riverside Avenue was temporarily closed during the emergency response at the scene, but has since reopened to traffic, police said early Sunday.

The incident is being investigated by the Westport Police Department’s Accident Investigation Team, assisted by accident investigators from the Fairfield Police Department.
