WESTON — Westport first responders — firefighters, police and EMS — were among the dozens dispatched to the scene of a massive fire that reduced a large Weston Road home to smoldering ruins Thanksgiving Day, not far from the Westport border — a blaze apparently triggered by frying a turkey.

The fire started about 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the garage of the home at 40 Weston Road, near Broad Street, and rapidly spread to the rest of the house, according to a report published by Weston Today.

Cause of the blaze, according to a preliminary investigation by the Weston Volunteer Fire Department, was frying a turkey in the home’s garage for a large holiday gathering, the website reported.

No injuries to people at the home or firefighters were reported.

In addition to firefighters from Westport, fire crews from Wilton, Redding, West Redding, Georgetown, Easton and Ridgefield provided support to Weston firefighters at the scene and supplemented coverage for the rest of town.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about 16 hours, according to published reports, to douse remaining hot spots in the rubble and ensure embers did not ignite any new blazes.

A post on the Westport Fire Department’s Facebook page, illustrated by photos of the conflagration, said: “These moments highlight the dedication and teamwork of our firefighters in the face of challenging conditions.”
