WESTPORT–Firefighters doused a house fire on Weathervane Hill overnight, Assistant Chief Brett Kirby of the Westport Fire Department said in a release this morning.

When firefighters arrived on the scene shortly before 11 p.m. last night, Kirby, as shift commander, found heavy smoke pouring from the rear of the house. All occupants of the house made it out safely before firefighters arrived, Kirby said.

“Engine 2 arrived with Truck 1 and started fire attack through the front of the house, as flames began to extend rapidly throughout the first floor,” Kirby said in the release. “Despite very heavy fire conditions as the crews entered the house, firefighters were able to control the main body of fire through a coordinated, aggressive attack.”

Engine 6 deployed a hose line to the rear of the house to control fire extending towards the second floor. Engine 4 and Engine 5 arrived and provided a water supply from a nearby hydrant and additional firefighters to aid in the fire attack, the release said.

After the main fire was extinguished, firefighters continued to extinguish hot spots throughout the house.

Several neighboring fire departments and other Westport agencies helped with the scene. Norwalk Fire Department responded to the scene as a Rapid Intervention Team while Fairfield Fire Department and Wilton Fire Department provided station coverage at Westport Fire Headquarters.

Westport EMS provided medical support for occupants and firefighters. Westport police officers controlled traffic at the scene and the Westport Department of Public Works mitigated the icy conditions in the frigid night.

The last Westport unit cleared the scene at 4 a.m. The Westport Fire Marshal’s Office took over the scene to investigate.
