WESTPORT — The last of the six cats trapped beneath the grate of storm drain on Post Road East were rescued Friday.

The rescue operations, which spanned several days, were led by volunteers from Westport Animal Shelter Advocates, Westport firefighters and the town’s animal control staff.

The mother cat and her five tiny offspring initially proved elusive, retreating from their would-be rescuers back into inaccessible reaches of the drain pipe. But over the course of nearly a week, the members of the feline family were trapped and turned over to the care of Animals in Distress in Wilton.

The cats will be available for adoption through that animal-rescue group, with the suggestion that they be named after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the popular cartoon characters who likewise emerged from sewers despite the odds.
