WESTPORT — Fire Department officials are warning that scammers are apparently trying to bilk the public with fraudulent requests for donations to the department.

In a statement posted Tuesday to the Fire Department’s Facebook page, officials said “a concerned resident” reported receiving a call from someone seeking “monetary donations” purportedly to support the department.

“The Westport Fire Department and the Westport Uniformed Firefighters Charitable Foundation will NEVER solicit donations over the phone,” the Facebook post emphasized.

The statement adds that anyone who receives a similar solicitation should not give any financial or personal information to the caller, and should report the incident immediately to authorities.
