Editor’s note: Following is an opinion submitted by Westporter Paul Block
The drive for power can inspire progress, but when rooted in fear it often turns destructive—showing up as criticism, exploitation, and control. Unfortunately, that’s what we see too often in the 2025 race for Westport First Selectman.
This tone clashes with the very character of Westport. Our town is known for its charm, creativity, and neighborly spirit. We value vibrant businesses, historic homes, and a strong sense of community shaped by the arts and civic institutions. Attacking and denigrating one another erodes that identity.
Yes, Westport faces real challenges. Our schools receive less state funding while costs rise, putting pressure on property taxes. Affordable housing impacts infrastructure, traffic, and parking. Growth and diversity test our ability to preserve Westport’s essence while adapting to change. But these challenges call for thoughtful leadership, not divisive politics.
That is why I support David Rosenwaks.
David is authentically Westport: well-educated, successful, analytical, and creative. More importantly, his values match our community’s. He is honest, trustworthy, courageous, and self-aware. He listens, collaborates, and leads thoughtfully. On issues like balancing the Long Lots gardens with the new school project, he seeks solutions that respect multiple perspectives rather than forcing one side to lose.
The way forward is clear: preserve Westport’s character by electing leaders who are fiscally responsible, socially inclusive, and authentically representative. David Rosenwaks exemplifies these qualities. He is the right leader to align our town government with the spirit of Westport.

What exactly is the spirit of Westport? Is it Tookers rainbow sidewalk across Jesup Green? Is it the diversity plaque overlooking the Saugatuck ? Is it the sign We Stand With Israel ?
I am the grandson of Westporters .I am a Christian Conservative born and raised in Westport. These are not my values.
Alex this is exactly the right question to ask. The spirit of Westport exists among the members of the community where values are shared, not where they diverge. I agree with some of your above points and respect your view on the others.
I think the spirit lives in our community shared the values. For example, I believe we share the value of education and lifelong learning. Westport has long been known for its excellent public schools, active PTAs, and strong support for the arts and enrichment programs. Regardless of background, residents place a high value on education as a foundation for opportunity and community strength. I also think we share the value for quality of life and a environmental sustainability. With its beaches, Long Island Sound, nature preserves, and historic character, Westport residents generally share a strong desire to protect the town’s natural beauty and preserve a high quality of life for families and future generations.
It is time to build on areas of convergence (shared values) and support authentic, genuine leadership that works for the all residents of Westport. That is the Spirit of Westport!
