With a heavy heart, we are announcing the passing of Dr. Steven Scher. He passed away in his home in Weston at the age of 82 with his wife Susan by his side.

Steven was born on April 10, 1943, in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn to his mother Norma and father Jack. He grew up under the wing of his loving older sister, Gloria, with whom he shared an incredible bond. As a boy, he was constantly out in his neighborhood playing stickball and running around with friends. He graduated from Brooklyn College before attending dental school at NYU. He then served two years in the US Army at Fort Sill in Oklahoma before going back to receive his Orthodontic Certificate from NYU where he graduated at the top of his class.

Steven eventually made his way to Westport to open an orthodontic practice, where he touched the hearts and teeth of countless members of the community. Through his practice and through his children, Jon, Lara, Peter and Alexander, Dr. Scher’s vibrant spirit was a beacon in the Fairfield County communities and beyond.

Steven did everything for his family. He loved tennis, golf, skiing the Rocky Mountains, and vacationing in the sunshine – all with his family by his side. Steven was a mainstay at the sporting events of all his children and grandchildren. He took time out of his busy schedule to show support for them.

His infectious sense of humor was unmistakable, and Steve shared his love and laughs with so many people. He was truly a special man.

Steven is survived by his wife Susan and their children Peter (Lesley) and Alexander (Dylan), his children Jon (Robyn), Lara (Mike) from his first marriage to Joan, and his sister, Gloria (Gerald), as well as his grandchildren Scarlett, Brooke, Jordan, Jake, and Astrid.

We’ll all miss him dearly.

A celebration of Steven’s life will be held at Temple Israel on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025 at 11am.

Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
