Malcolm Gilmour Watson, Jr., died unexpectedly Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 76.
Malcolm was a lifelong resident of Westport. He is survived by wife Roseann; daughter Amanda and husband Nathan; grandchildren Conrad and Rosie; son Malcolm III; brother Elmer G. Sniffen and wife Patricia; sister Nancy Sniffen, and sister-in-law Kathleen Carusone.
Malcolm was an avid swimmer and sailor. A member of the “High Tide Club,” he swam at Burying Hill Beach nearly year-round. He was a regular rower and a member of the Norwalk River Rowing Club, where he also served as a mentor for generations of younger rowers. He competed as a rower and coxswain all over the East Coast and in the Head of the Charles annual race in Boston, bringing the whole family to Boston to enjoy the event.
Malcolm graduated from Staples High School in 1967 and was then employed by Nash Engineering in South Norwalk. He later served in the Navy in Vietnam during the war. He could be seen each Memorial Day marching in the Westport parade.
Always handy with his hands, he owned Nielsen’s Wood Arts, a furniture refinishing business where he performed delicate and meticulous antique furniture restoration.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Burying Hill Beach, Burying Hill Road and Beachside Avenue. (Parking at the beach may be limited so please try to carpool. Plan to enjoy the beach and bring a beach chair and your swimsuit if you are a swimmer.)
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any donations be made to an organization of your choice.
