Following is the obituary for FRED C. HUNTER III, submitted for his family by the Harding Funeral Home.

Fred C. Hunter III, of Wilton, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 2, 2024.

Fred was born Oct. 10, 1943, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Fred and Ruth (Imsande) Hunter Jr. 

He moved several times during his youth as his father was a minor league coach with the Cincinnati Reds. 

He graduated Heidelberg University in 1966, married his wife of 48 years, Carole Sue (Harper) of Bay Village, Ohio, in 1967, and then embarked on a long and distinguished sales career in the paper industry starting with Mead Paper in Dallas, Texas. 

In addition, he spent many years in Centerville, Ohio, before eventually settling in Westport in 1982.

Fred was an avid and accomplished golfer having won several club championships, recording many holes-in-one and most recently shooting his age or better several times. He was involved with the Longshore Men’s Golf Association and the Y’s Men of Westport for many years as well. 

Through the years Fred assumed many roles, including youth baseball coach, lifelong Reds fan, Dallas Cowboys fan, but most importantly, was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him.

Fred is survived by his son Paul Hunter and his wife Wendy, and two grandchildren, Lauren (18) and Chase (15), of Hinsdale, Ill., and his son James Hunter and his partner Courtney Bauknecht of Woodbury, and his dear friend and companion Kathleen Lala of Wilton. He was preceded in death by his wife Carole, his brother Edwin, and parents Fred and Ruth.

The family will receive friends at the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East, on Thursday, Oct 24, from 3-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Y’s Men of Westport, P.O. Box 167, Westport, CT 06881.
