Following is the obituary for CAROL MEIER, submitted for the family by the Harding Funeral Home.

Carol (Longmuir) Meier, RN/CDE, at the age of 80 years old passed away peacefully with her son, Douglas and wife Valerie, by her side on July 12, 2022.

The resident of Murrells Inlet, S.C., formerly was a resident of Westport and Stanton, N.J. 

Born Feb. 7, 1942, in Norwalk Hospital to John and Doris Longmuir, she was a graduate of Staples High School. She went on to Yale’s Grace New Haven School of Nursing.  Growing up she became active with the Girl Scouts, which led her to the Mariner Scouts where she developed a deep love for sailing.  

Her family was also active with the United Methodist Church of Westport where she attended the Methodist Youth Group meetings. It was here where she met a young man that would later become her husband of 33 years, Frederick Meier, Jr. Carol and Fred were grade school sweethearts that would lead to a 50-plus-year relationship.  Unfortunately, Fred passed away in 1994 at the age of 52.  Carol loved her Fred until the day she passed. 

Her career as a nurse took her to many states. She often referred to herself as a trailing spouse. Fred’s career with the American Diabetes Association caused Carol to hold active nursing licenses in several states, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and finally New Jersey. She started out in general nursing, which led to pediatrics, infectious disease coordinator for Holy Redeemer Hospital, one of the largest Catholic hospitals on the East Coast, outside of Philadelphia. Her next move took her to the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield. It was there that she held the position of head nurse and later became the director of nursing. The next move was to Virginia, where she joined a visiting nursing service. Her final nursing shifts would bring her to New Jersey, where she started as a visiting nurse and then at the age of 60 went back to school to receive a degree as a certified diabetic educator, which Carol retired from. 

While in New Jersey, she was very active with the Whitehouse United Methodist Church, participating in Bible study as well as book club. 

She enjoyed hiking, bird watching, reading and trips to Nana’s beach. 

She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren during the holidays and special occasions.  They include Kelly Arciola and husband Sam III; their two sons, Sam IV and Dominic; Megan Meier and William Bodie, BBF, and grand-dog Yager; John Meier and wife Lauren; their three children, Adrianna, Harper and Jack; Nana’s precious twins, Lillian and Brieanna; Sean O’Shea, Robert O’Shea and his son Michael O’Shea.  

Carol is also survived by her brother, Robert Longmuir, and his children.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Meier, Jr.; her parents, John and Doris Longmuir, and her sister in-law, Annette Longmuir.  

Memorial donations can be made in her remembrance to the American Diabetes Association.

The family will receive friends in the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East, on Tuesday, July 19, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral on Wednesday, July 20, at 11 a.m., meeting directly at the United Methodist Church, 49 Weston Road. Interment will follow in Willowbrook Cemetery, 395 Main St.

Pallbearers are John Meier, Sam Arciola III, Sam Arciola IV, Dominic Arciola, Seth Van Beever and Baird Van Beever.
