Arthur “Art” Greenberg passed away on November 25, 2025, at Maplewood of Southport, at the age of 90.

Art was born in The Manhattan Beach section of Brooklyn on February 11, 1935, to Samuel Greenberg and Myriam Goldstein Greenberg.

He lived an idyllic life in Manhattan Beach with his immediate and extended family.

Art was an excellent athlete, had a wonderful singing voice, was an accomplished pianist and was passionate about learning and education. He was always fascinated by how things worked.

Photography became a life-long hobby and a handy tool during his working days.

Art graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, a highly competitive and selective public school. His focus of study was engineering. He was heavily involved in extracurricular activities at Brooklyn Tech, as he played four years of varsity golf (captain his senior year), managed the school paper, and tutored other students in math and engineering.

Upon graduation from Brooklyn Tech, he accepted admission to Yale University, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation from Yale he entered the family business, Union Confectionery Machinery Company in New York City. The company was established by his great-grandfather in 1912 with principal activities that included buying, selling and rebuilding used confectionery machinery and building new equipment. During his first two years of work, he simultaneously earned a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Columbia University.

He served his country as an Army reservist in the summer of 1957, earning the rank of staff sergeant and Soldier of the Month honors along the way.

Art had an exceptional career in the machinery business, earning the respect of customers in the confectionery, baking and snack food industries around the world. Over his career he was responsible for buying and selling machinery and oversaw the manufacture of new machinery. He also introduced European machinery into the North American market, establishing a foothold for those brands that were previously unknown to the market. He was known throughout the world as an expert in the confectionery field who was always knowledgeable, helpful, prepared and highly professional. His organizational skills were legendary and his volunteer work in the professional associations he served was instrumental to the growth of those industries. He traveled the world during his career, finally retiring from the business in 2007 after 51 years of devoted service.

In his retirement he was very active with the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston, a group of retired and semi-retired businessmen. He led walking groups, organized speakers and was also involved in the organization’s leadership, eventually becoming president for a term. He was honored to be part of this amazing group.

Art married Renee Stern Dreyfus in July 1962. Together they had two sons, Jim and John, and had a wonderful life in Westport, CT. He was active as a little league coach and always attended his kid’s and grandkid’s sporting and music events, despite his busy work and travel schedule. It was his pleasure to support them. His sons joined him in the business, which made him proud to no end.

He will be remembered fondly by all who have known him over the years.

Art is survived by his sons Jim (Lisa) Greenberg of Fairfield, CT and John (Carolyn) Greenberg of Ramsey, NJ and Saranac Lake, NY and their children – Michael (Beth) Greenberg, Melanie Greenberg, Abigail Greenberg and Samuel Greenberg. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Wotman of The Bronx, NY along with cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Myriam Greenberg, his wife of 59 years, Renee Greenberg, and his brother, Robert Greenberg, with whom he worked closely in the family business for 30 years.

Education was a primary concern for Art throughout his life. If you are so moved, please donate to an organization in his memory that is supportive of learning at any level.

Funeral service will take place on Sunday November 30, 2025, at 10 am at Congregation B’nai Israel, 2710 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, CT.

A private service of interment will follow for the family.
