WESTPORT — A local vigil for the victims of the school massacre in Texas is planned Sunday afternoon.

The gathering, organized by the Interfaith Clergy Association of Westport and Weston, will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, on Veterans Green.

Twenty-one people — 19 young students and two teachers — were killed Tuesday at a school in Uvalde, Texas, by an 18-year-old gunman who had purchased his weapons a week earlier. Seventeen others were wounded in the incident.

The vigil, according to a statement by First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker, will “allow us to come together to mourn, show our support and just be together as a community in the wake of this tragedy. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join.”

“There is no imminent threat in Westport,” Tooker said in her statement, but also urged action on gun safety to try to prevent such incidents in the future.

“Congress must pass legislation that protects all of us with common sense gun regulations consistent with Second Amendment rights.

“We cannot endure another tragedy like this. Action must be taken,” the first selectwoman added.

Resources to help people cope with the tragedy are posted on the Westport Together website.
