WESTPORT — A local high school senior is among those from around the Northeast honored by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation with one of the group’s annual Youth Awards, recognizing “their leadership in the classroom and community.”
Helena Servin-DeMarrais of Westport, a senior at Greenwich Academy, is the recipient of a “silver” level citation in the awards’ healthcare and science category.
She is one of 30 high school seniors from Connecticut and six other Northeastern states to receive Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards in 10 categories.
Three students are selected in each category with gold, silver and bronze citations. They will be recognized in a virtual ceremony on Feb. 22. One national recipient in each category will be recognized at the foundation’s National Youth Awards ceremony.
“We are thrilled to honor and celebrate 300 Latinx outstanding young leaders, but it is also a call to action because they give our community and our nation our best hope,” Antonio Tijerino, president and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, said in a statement announcing the awards.
The Hispanic Heritage Foundation is a national nonprofit focused on education, workforce, social impact and culture, according to the announcement.
