WESTPORT — A cadet from Westport is a member of one of the teams representing the U.S. Military Academy at West Point against 47 other competitors in the annual Sandhurst Military Skills Competition this weekend.
Cadet Will Cooper, of Westport and a 2022 graduate of Hopkins School in New Haven, is a member of the academy’s Black team competing in the challenging event.
The competition is “a rigorous 36-hour course to test warrior spirit, cohesion and dedication to mission accomplishment,” according to the U.S. Military Academy’s announcement.
Started in 1967, the competition will take place April 26-27 at West Point, N.Y. This year, it will include teams from West Point, the other U.S. military service academies, university ROTC teams and international squads.
The winning team will be chosen based on its “collective performance in 15 different events testing physical fitness, military skills, teamwork and leadership,” the academy organizers said.
“Sandhurst is the premier cadet military skills competition in the world. This year’s competition is designed to push them to their limits and, in the process, inspire us with their tenacity, determination and grit,” Col. Mark Federovich, the director of the Department of Military Instruction, said in the announcement.
“We are honored to host an event that showcases how impressive these competitors are. They are the best of the best and highlight how bright our collective future is with these fine leaders leading the way.”
The competition can be viewed via live-stream on YouTube: April 26 at 4:30 p.m., “Ruck/March to Camp Buckner;” April 27 at noon, “The Crucible,” and April 27 at 6 p.m., “Awards Ceremony.”
