WESTPORT — What better way to learn about civic engagement than hear first-hand from three of Westport’s most civically engaged residents?

Members of the Board of Selectwomen on Monday visited Staples High School to discuss what it means to be a citizen actively involved in the community and the various ways to do it.

The officials’ visit marked the start of “Civic Learning Week” at the high school, part of a national initiative to encourage “students with the tools to become active, civically engaged members of their community,” according to a press release from the school district.

At Staples, First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker, joined by Selectwomen Andrea Moore and Candice Savin, fielded questions from students at a forum moderated by seniors Scarlett Siegel and Spencer Yim.

Questions to the selectwomen covered a range of topics, including sustainability and traffic, according to the press statement.

“Staples students asked great questions and really enjoyed learning about public service. It’s a great opportunity to see civics in action, especially in a local context,” Lauren Francese, social studies coordinator, said in the statement.

Speakers from other government departments are scheduled to meet with students over the remainder of the week, including representatives of the Board of Education and Registrars of Voters Office.
