WESTPORT — The Staples High School Jazz Ensemble hit a high note recently, scoring second place in the National Jazz Festival’s top division during the competition in Philadelphia.
In addition to the ensemble’s achievement, the group’s drummer, Witt Lindau, was recognized with one of three “Outstanding Musician” medals at the event.
It is the second time in recent years that Staples jazz musicians have won national recognition.
In 2021, the Jazz Combo was awarded first place for the Small Ensemble Division 1 live performance at the National Jazz Festival.
The ensemble, under the direction of Phil Giampietro, at this year’s festival performed a repertoire that included “Cubauza” by Michael Philip Mossman, “Movin’ Uptown” by Benny Carter, edited by David Berger, “Groove Merchant” by Jerome Richardson, arranged by Thad Jones, and “Shades On, Roof Down” by Eric Richards.
The musicians’ “incredible achievement is a testament to their perseverance during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Giampietro said in a statement from the school district.
“I am inspired by their continued commitment to making great music.”
Also credited with guiding the musicians’ development is Gregg Winters, assistant director of the Staples Jazz Band and director of the Bedford Middle School Band.
