WESTPORT — COVID-19 home testing kits will be available to students and staff at Westport public schools when classes resume Monday after the winter recess.

A “significant” supply of at-home tests for the virus is on hand, according to a Friday announcement by Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice, with more expected to be delivered by the state next week.

The kits can be obtained by contacting health offices at each of the town’s schools, Scarice said.

The mandatory mask-wearing requirement in local schools also is expected to be lifted Monday by the Board of Education, which is scheduled to act on Scarice’s recommendation to end the requirement.

The number of confirmed COVID cases in the Westport school district has fallen sharply over the last several weeks.

According to latest data from the district’s COVID-19 dashboard, six confirmed cases have been reported among students and staff this week, down from 26 cases the week before.

The schools next week also will continue to conduct weekly serial testing of students who have opted into the program, the superintendent said.
