WESTPORT — On “International Women’s Day,” women made sure their voices were heard Saturday in Westport.

With a “Unite and Resist” rally slated to begin at 11 a.m., protestors and supporters had been clapping and waving signs on sidewalks along the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge at least 20 minutes earlier.

An estimated 170 signed up to participate, but the determined crowd looked larger, many holding signs demanding women’s equality and anti-Trump/Musk messages.

“I’m here because I want women to have equal rights,” said Bean Corcoran, rally organizer of ReSisters.

She stopped herself, then continued, “It’s impossible to say what bothers me most, because I feel terrible for the federal workers who are being fired … we’re on a nasty loop where women are considered less than men.”

Sari Bode echoed Bean’s sentiments, asserting, “Reproductive justice has gone by the wayside because all of the craziness and chaos in Washington right now.”

Her friend, Victoria Sybelnik, pointed to a pin on her pink cowboy hat, “You see one of these buttons on my head? It’s from 1989. I was protesting for women’s rights then and here we are today in 2025 and we still don’t have them.

“It’s disgusting,” she added.

Parents brought their children, eager for them to learn to stand up for themselves.

Christina Torres and daughter Kilee held complementary signs. “I want to show my daughter that making a stand and having a voice and using it is important,” she said, while Kilee nodded beside her.

Natalie Myers, who attended with her grandsons, said, “They have to learn how to stand up for the rights, for the rights of everyone. What’s Donald doing? Taking away all those rights.”
