WESTPORT — A nearly six-decade-old relationship between Westport and the world will be renewed Saturday when the town welcomes United Nations delegates and staff for “jUNe Day.”

An official start to the 58th annual observance will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 24, on Jesup Green as part of the “Great Duck Race” festivities sponsored by the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club.

At the ceremony, First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker will welcome United Nations Under-Secretary General Christian Saunders, who is scheduled to read a jUNe Day message from Secretary General Antonio Guterres to the gathering.

As is traditional, the national flags of United Nations members will fly from the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge spanning the Saugatuck River. Cohen, who was a Westport resident, founded the area UN Association, and over the years helped to promote local ties with the United Nations and its officials through various events, including jUNe Day.

The event is organized by the UN Association of Southwestern Connecticut and the town’s International Hospitality Committee.

On Saturday, UN visitors will be hosted at events and venues around town, including visits to Earthplace and Wakeman Town Farm, Compo Beach, tennis and golf at Longshore Club Park and a soccer game between a UN team and the Westport Knights.

Visitors also will have a chance to explore downtown stores, which over the weekend are hosting their annual Sidewalk Sale.
