WESTPORT–On a day when Westport safety officials declared a frigid weather emergency, hundreds of revelers showed up Friday evening, Dec. 5, to celebrate the impending winter season at Wakeman Town Farm’s annual holiday tree lighting.

Staples High School student jazz duo, On The Count Of Two, started off the evening with jazzy holiday cheer.

Rousing renditions of festive holiday music followed the duo, from local student musicians from Greens Farms and Saugatuck Elementary schools, plus a few members of the Staples High School Band playing Christmas and Chanukah favorites.

Families enjoyed hot chocolate and sweet treats courtesy of The Granola Bar and Sweet P Bakery as they listened to the music.  Afterward, Bill Constantino, a Wakeman family member, and Kevin Christie, newly elected First Selectman, lit up the Wakeman tree to kick off the holidays and keep a generations-old family tradition alive for the community.

In the spirit of the season, many of the revelers brought and donated diapers, toys and food.

Christy Colasurdo, WTF’s Co-Chair Emeritus & Events Director told Westport Journal she wanted to publicly thank all the individuals who planned and executed the event, especially “Nancy Plotkin, Judy Sloan, Liz Milwe, Bill Constantino, John Montoni, and Nicole Gerber and the SLOBS, who provided muscle and good cheer!”
