WESTPORT–Westporters interested in serving on the Westport Library Board of Trustees can apply now through March 20.

The Westport Library Board and the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) are accepting applications from candidates to fill four seats on the 20-member board. Three of the seats are held by Pat Wieser, Scott Bennewitz and Jeremy Price, all of whose terms are ending. The fourth seat is vacant.

The Library Board and RTM will each name two board members. 

“The trustee position presents an opportunity for civic-minded individuals to make a meaningful impact in the community by guiding the Library in its mission,” the Library said in a release. “Trustees play a key role in helping assure that the Library remains a vital community resource and a center of innovation and engagement.”

Trustee responsibilities include:

  • Helping assure that The Westport Library fulfills its mission, maintains financial stability and complies with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Participating in shaping and monitoring the library’s long-term goals, policies and strategic priorities to maintain excellence and community relevance.
  • Supporting and advising the executive director and library leadership, providing guidance while respecting operational boundaries.
  • Reviewing budgets, monitoring expenditures and supporting fundraising efforts.
  • Serving as ambassadors for the library, promoting its programs, services and impact. 
  • Attending meetings, actively contributing to discussions and serving on committees.
  • Supporting and protecting the library’s commitment to intellectual freedom.
  • Staying informed about public library best practices, trends and legal and regulatory matters affecting the library.

To be eligible, a candidate must be a resident of Westport during the 12-month period preceding June 30, 2026. Trustees serve four-year terms, beginning July 1, 2026.

Additional valued qualifications include the ability to work collaboratively with others; fundraising experience and strong community connections; knowledge of public funding; prior board service; and skills in strategic planning, finance, law, nonprofit operations or in areas supporting innovation and digital strategy.

In addition to its collections of books for children, teenagers and adults, the Westport Library features a MakerSpace; a Library of Things; a Seed Library; a café and store; and professional art installations that rotate throughout the year.

The library also is home to Verso Studios, which includes a sound studio and broadcast control suite; and Trefz Forum, an open, flexible space that can accommodate up to 600 audience members and features an 18-foot video wall, 35-foot stage, sound system and theatrical lighting.
