WESTPORT–It’s almost time for Westport’s dogs to have their day at the beach.

Compo Beach, closed to canines during the summer, opens for pooches from Oct. 1, 2025 – that’s next Wednesday – through March 31, 2026. But Parks & Recreation Director Erik Barbieri reminds residents and visitors to follow several rules:

  • Dogs are prohibited from the Pavilion, playground and walkways.
  • All dogs must be leashed in all areas of the park except in the designated off-leash area of the beach south of the Pavilion, including South Beach. (Regulations are posted at the entrance to the off-leash area.)
  • Owners and other dog walkers are required by law to pick up after their dogs.

A violation of the regulations can carry a $77 fine

Dogs are prohibited from the beaches from April 1 through Sept. 30, “except when going to and from boats at Ned Dimes Marina,” according to the town website.

Barbieri also reminds residents that animals are not permitted on town athletic fields or playgrounds at any time, in accordance with Westport Parks and Recreation Department Rules and Regulations.

“This policy helps protect public safety, support athletic programs and maintain field conditions,” an announcement from the Parks and Recreation Department reads. “While animals are welcome in surrounding areas, owners are encouraged to keep them leashed near these facilities.”

Animals are prohibited from all of Luciano Park as it is comprised entirely of an athletic field and playground.
