WESTPORT — A veritable forest of tree-centric events is “planted” in town this month, which marks the 150th annual observance of Arbor Day on April 29.

It’s particularly appropriate in Westport since the town was awarded a “Tree City USA” citation by the Arbor Day Foundation in 2021.

Events planned by the Westport Tree Board, as well other groups, include:

Saturday, April 23, 10:30 a.m.-noon: Earth Day program on Jesup Green.

“Family-friendly activities” organized by the Westport Book Shop are planned, while the Tree Board will offer “native tree sapling giveaways,” courtesy of Bartlett Tree Co., and educational materials. The event is free; activities will move inside the book store, 23 Jesup Road, in case of inclement weather.

Arbor Day — Friday, April 29, 3-4 p.m.: The Tree Board’s annual free giveaway of native saplings at Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave.

Also on offer will be brochures and advice from arborist professionals, and Tree Board members will be on hand to discuss related issues. Saplings will be provided by Bartlett Tree Co.

Saturday, April 30, 3-4 p.m.: Free information session with a tree professional at Earthplace, 10 Woodside Lane.

The Tree Board will host Douglas Zitnay, owner of Darling Gardens LLC in Orange, who will discuss the basics of tree planting and maintenance, including tips on selection, mulching, pruning, pest management and more. Native tree saplings also will be available.

Saturday, April 30, 4-6 p.m.: Earthplace hosts “A Toast to the Trees.”

The event will include walks through the nature center’s woods, and a chance to sample sap being harvested there. There also will be beer for adults from several craft breweries, Dough Girls pizza, s’mores around a campfire and activities for children.

Mid-April: “StoryWalk” at  Lillian Wadsworth Arboretum, 2 Woodside Lane.

The Tree Board and Westport Library will create a trail with a theme shared with the book, “Be a Tree,” by Maria Gianferrari. The Storywalk starts from the arboretum’s parking lot at the main trail to the large Norway maple. Details will be posted on the library’s “Kids” page.

April: Red maple planting at Grace K. Salmon Park off Imperial Avenue.

On a date to be determined, Tree Warden Ben Sykas will plant a red maple tree at a site on the north side of the park where a large tree recently was removed.
