WESTPORT — More than 5,000 runners are expected to hit the streets Thursday in the Pequot Runners annual Thanksgiving Day race and walk.

A large part of the 5-mile race course passes through Westport, and police warn that motorists should expect local road closures and delays for several hours Thursday morning.

The Southport-based race, which starts at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, begins there on Pequot Avenue and enters Westport on Beachside Avenue. The route then heads north on Sasco Creek Road, east on Greens Farms Road, northwest on Clapboard Hill Road, south on Maple Avenue South, west on Greens Farms Road, south on New Creek Road, east on Beachside Avenue and returns to Pequot Avenue in Southport toward the finish line.

The route for the 2.6-mile walk is entirely within the Southport section of Fairfield.

Most runners are expected to clear the Westport segment of the race by approximately 10:30 a.m., police said.
