WESTPORT — “When My Sleeping Dragon Woke,” a film based on the childhood of actress/playwright Sharon Washington, will be screened June 14 at the Westport Country Playhouse.

The presentation, sponsored by TEAM Westport, the town’s multicultural advisory committee, will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, June 14, at the playhouse, 25 Powers Court.

After the screening, Washington and Chuck Schultz, the film’s creators, will join Mark Shanahan, the playhouse artistic director, for a discussion.

Washington, nominated for a 2023 Tony Award for co-authoring the book for the musical, “New York, New York,” has performed in numerous stage and film productions.

“When My Sleeping Dragon Woke” employs interviews, animation and verité to follow Washington as she plans to write a play about her past. She grew up in a custodial apartment inside a New York City public library, where her father’s job was to stoke the coal furnace.

The project involved “delving into her upbringing, her relationship with her parents, the process of letting go of the idealized narratives of childhood and, as a young woman, embracing new opportunities and breaking down barriers,” according to publicity for the program.

“But creating the play comes with an unforeseen cost — waking the family dragon she thought she’d silenced decades ago.”

Harold Bailey Jr., the TEAM Westport chairman, said in the statement, “This award-winning film and its talk-back beautifully present the universal story of living an experience, reflecting on it, writing a work about it, staging the work for presentation and presenting it as performer.

“All this with the added dimension of handling the emotional baggage unearthed at every stage of the cycle. It is not to be missed,” he added.
