WESTPORT — Unused prescription drugs will be collected Saturday through a program sponsored by the Police Department, with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The local collection is set from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave.

It’s planned in conjunction with the 22nd “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day,” organized by the DEA as a way to help limit the surge in drug overdoses across the country.

The program is free and anonymous; no questions will be asked, according to organizers.

Pills and medical patches will be collected, but liquids, needles or sharps will not be accepted. Only vape pens with removable batteries will be accepted.

Residents also can drop off unused prescription drugs any time in a collection bin in the lobby of Police Department headquarters, 50 Jesup Road.

More than 93,000 people died of drug overdoses in the U.S. last year, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the largest number of drug-related deaths recorded in a single year, according to a press release issued for the event.

Opioid-related deaths accounted for 75 percent of all overdose deaths in the year 2020.

During a drug-collection program last October, the DEA and law-enforcement partners took in 745,000 pounds of unneeded prescriptions across the country, organizers said.
