WESTPORT — DefenDemocracy of CT has scheduled a “Rally Against Regression” for Sunday, June 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge on the Post Road downtown.
The rally is in response to two U.S. Supreme Court decisions announced this week — one reversing the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion right decision, and the other overturning New York state’s long-standing law limited who can carry a concealed gun.

It seems a bit paradoxical that one would rally against a decision made by an independent judiciary in the name of defending democracy. First, you are undermining an institution that is a pillar of a functioning democracy. What is the point of the rally? To get courts to bend to popular will rather than interpret the law? Second, you are ignoring the democratic mechanism that is available for you to get what you want. So the rally should be in favor of federal abortion laws and gun laws and constitutional amendments. The pressure should be applied to democratically elected legislators rather than judges.
Perfectly stated. Direct your protest at your elected federal legislators – Blumenthal, Murphy, Himes, etc. They can propose and put forward legislation on abortion, guns, immigration, etc. Nothing gets done. Nothing gets accomplished. Slaves to lobbyists.
The supposedly independent judiciary—the Supreme Court—has and follows no code of ethics and is responsible to the American people, all of whom are equal. They have failed in their most basic obligation and now declared that a majority of American citizens have no right to privacy and must submit their most intimate and personal decisions to the authority of the state in which they live.
Of course this failure will elicit peaceful and continuous protest until it is put right.
Each successive blow this Supreme Court strikes against the equality of all Americans, the right to vote, the right to same sex marriage, the protection of all including Trans people, the right to equal education, the integrity of our social safety net—all of which Clarence Thomas has informed us is on his perverse agenda—must be met with vigorous protest.
Excellent comments, Werner Liepolt; thank you for posting.
