WESTPORT — An 18-year-old Staples High School senior, riding a dirt bike on Old Hill Road, was killed in a collision with a dump truck Wednesday afternoon,

Max Harper was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which took place near 86 Old Hill Road shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Harper was traveling south on Old Hill when he collided with a “fully loaded” dump truck heading north at a sharp curve in the street near Partrick Road, according to police.

The truck driver, attempting to avoid an accident, veered off the roadway and struck several trees, causing the truck to flip onto its side and spill its contents.

The driver was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries that police said appeared to be non-life-threatening.

The accident remains under investigation.

Staples High School will open two hours late Thursday morning, Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice said in a statement.

All Thursday games scheduled by the high school’s athletic teams have been canceled.

“This loss is heartbreaking for our school and extended community, and I know many of you, along with our students, will feel its impact in the days ahead,” Scarice said.

“For any students needing support prior to the opening school, the Staples counseling staff will be available to provide support to individuals and small groups of students,” he added.

“In moments like these, words just fall short,” the superintendent said. “But what we can offer is our unwavering support to those affected by this tragedy, beginning with Max’s family. Please come together during this difficult time — lean on one another and extend compassion to those who are grieving.”

Police Chief Foti Koskinas also expressed condolences to the Harper family on behalf of the Police Department.
