WESTPORT–The repair of the Sherwood Mill Cove tide gates, reconstruction of the wooden pier and related work is scheduled to begin shortly after Labor Day, the town departments of Public Works and Parks and Recreation announced today.

The Sherwood Mill Cove Tide Gate Replacement Project will partially restrict adjacent municipal parking, occupying 10 spaces in the Old Mill Parking Lot and 20 spaces in the Soundview lot, the departments said. The spaces are needed to stage equipment and store materials.

A locked pedestrian gate on the walkway stirred up opinions when the town decided to earmark $5.6 million of ARPA funds for this project.

“The scheduled work includes the repair of two tide gates and a spillway, reconstruction of a wooden pier and four short sections of seawalls, as well as repair of the longer seawall sections,” the departments said in an announcement.

The work, which is being coordinated with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, is expected to continue through Memorial Day 2026.

“The Town of Westport appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this important infrastructure project is completed,” the announcement said.
