WESTPORT, Conn. — From sweeping Sound views to quiet marsh trails, Sherwood Island State Park offers one of Fairfield County’s most diverse natural landscapes, and a welcome escape from the pace of daily life.

Open year-round and spanning 238 acres, the park features sandy beaches, coastal wetlands, meadows, and woodlands, all threaded with walking paths and picnic areas. Whether for birdwatching, quiet reflection, or a casual family outing, Sherwood Island provides a flexible and restorative outdoor experience.

A place where wildlife flourishes

The park is a haven for wildlife. Red-winged blackbirds call from the reeds, egrets stalk tidal shallows, and osprey soar over the marsh. In winter, visitors may spot snow buntings along the dunes, while summer brings dragonflies, crabs, and butterflies in abundance.

Benches and observation points throughout the park offer quiet places to sit and watch for wildlife, or simply to enjoy the Sound breeze.

Trails and amenities for all

Sherwood Island’s trail system offers both paved and natural-surface options, making it accessible for most mobility levels. The paved loop near the beach is ideal for strollers, wheelchairs, or casual strolls, while the inland trails provide more secluded routes through forest and meadow.

Visitors will find ample picnic tables, grills, restrooms, and a seasonal nature center. The beach is staffed with lifeguards in the summer, and the park is dog-friendly in the off-season.

A place of remembrance

Sherwood Island is also home to Connecticut’s official 9/11 Living Memorial. On clear days, visitors can look across Long Island Sound toward New York City, where the Twin Towers once stood. A dedicated memorial space honors the Connecticut residents who died in the attacks.

It’s a solemn yet peaceful corner of the park that invites quiet reflection, tucked away from the main paths but open to all.

Seasonal beauty

Each season brings new textures to Sherwood Island. Spring’s wildflowers and summer’s sea breezes give way to autumn foliage and stark winter light. The park’s varied ecosystems ensure that no two visits feel quite the same.
