WESTPORT–It looks like the area isn’t done with the Arctic weather yet, and Westport Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Scarice cautions that the district will be on the alert for potential closings and delays into next month.

“February break (Feb. 16-20) may spare us at least one winter weather decision, but early forecasts suggest we may still be looking at snow on the ground well into March,” Scarice wrote to district families yesterday. “Seems like the groundhog and meteorologists are on the same page…and winter is in no hurry to leave.

When it’s possible, Scarice said, he’ll decide whether to delay or close schools the night before, but with the weather’s unpredictability, that will be rare.

“Many factors go into these decisions, including temperature differences across town, conditions from the northern side of town to southern side, and coordination with the town on road clearing,” he wrote.

More often, he tries to decide by 5:30 a.m., the message said. That decision follows a call held sometime from 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. with superintendents throughout the region and the consulting meteorologist on whom they all rely.

The meteorologist is forecasting “a series of storms and continued cold temperatures throughout February,” Scarice said.
